Core Technology Facility

Client: HBG Construction Ltd

Contract Value: £3,000,000

Weatherwise were awarded the contract to work on the Core Technology Facility, built by Manchester Innovations Limited, responsible for marketing the outputs of research from the University of Manchester and elsewhere.

The £3 million contract encompassed the design, supply and installation of the total envelope package. The specification included low pitch roof panels and flat panels with a single ply membrane. Luxalon wall cladding was been specified, with structural glazing, curtain walling and windows, and the project also required terracotta rainscreen tiles, louvres and sunscreening with an abseil and mansafe system. Weatherwise were selected by main contractor HBG Construction Ltd as they could provide the most competitive solution for the design criteria and eliminate any potential interface problems. The site is on the corner of Upper Brook Street and Grafton Street in Manchester with the site boundary very close to the building line, therefore, Weatherwise expertise in restricted access projects with associated safety considerations was another contributing factor in winning the contract.

One of the key factors in the project was the roll-forming on site of the standing seam roof sheets, which would otherwise have been at risk during transportation and hoisting.

Particular attention had to be paid to the perimeter details to ensure there compliance with Part L of the new building regulations.

Another of the key factors in the project is the need to manufacture the long length standing seam sheets that will be used in the new roof on site, as they would be very difficult to transport.
